Although scientific research had been gathered as early as 2000 linking Vioxx to increased heart attacks and strokes, Merck, the manufacturer, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said nothing. The Reuters report was focused on research published in the Lancet which indicated that the risk of heart attack increases up to three times greater and that the risk of heart failure doubles among heavier users of such anti-inflammatory drugs.In most circumstances, underlying pro-inflammatory conditions can be adjusted with an altered diet, reduced stress, and avoidance of environmental chemical exposures.
